Engine oil is an important component of your car and is vital to ensure it runs smoothly. During an annual service the oil level on your car will be checked and topped up if needed. However we think it is also important to know how to do this yourself so you can check on a regular basis. Here is a quick and easy guide to checking your oil level!
Switch off your engine
Before opening the bonnet and checking the oil level make sure you turn off the engine and leave your car for around 10 minutes to cool down.
Locate and clean the dipstick
The dipstick you ask? You should be able to identify it by a little brightly coloured loop you can pull, as demonstrated in the image below! Pull the dipstick out and clean it with a cloth, keeping an eye out for the markers which you’ll use to check the oil level.
Check the oil level
Once the dipstick is clean slowly place it back into the oil, you can then pull it back out and check the oil level. It should sit between the upper and lower markers on the dipstick. If the oil level is towards the lower mark then it’s time to top up, make sure you check the oil level again after filling to make sure the level is correct, and don’t over fill as this can cause leaks! If you aren’t sure how to check your oil or you’re concerned something isn’t quite right when you check it then you can give us a call and we can book it in for a service. You can also book your car in online if it’s easier for you!
