How to drive in fog

Heavy fog has blanketed parts of the UK quite a lot recently. So we decided to share with you our top tips on how to drive in fog so you can stay safe on the road.

Before you set off make sure you’re familiar with all the lights in your car and you know how to turn on the fog lights. Also take the opportunity to make sure all your headlights are working as they should be. When you are out on the road it is important to keep a greater distance between you and the car in front when fog is limiting the your view.

When to use your fog lights

You should only use your fog lights when your visibility is reduced to below 100m, using them at any other time will dazzle other drivers so make sure you only use them when appropriate to do so. Never use your full beam in fog, as well as blinding other drivers it will also reflect back on the fog and make it harder for you to see the road ahead. Make sure you turn your fog lights off when the road ahead clears to beyond 100m.

The most important thing to remember when driving in fog is take it steady, think ahead about other junctions and bends in the road that may provide other hazards made worse when the fog is thick. If the fog is too heavy and is limiting your view too much then it may be best to stay home and wait for it to clear.
